The official three-player rules

As summarised by mahjong teacher Tom Sloper from the National Mah Jongg League's 2018 rulebook and later League rulings:

  1. Use all 152 tiles and build four walls as usual.
  2. Leave the fourth seat empty and do not deal to it.
  3. Deal four tiles at a time to each player until everyone has 12.
  4. Finish the deal so the dealer has 14 and the other two have 13. In the League's most recent published ruling, the dealer takes the next 2 tiles and each other player takes 1.
  5. Skip the Charleston. The dealer starts by discarding.
  6. Draw from the wall in the usual order and direction.

Sloper notes that the League has published slightly different final-deal procedures over the years. They all end with 14, 13 and 13 tiles; pick one and use it consistently.

Should you play a Charleston anyway?

Many groups find the game flat without one, so a three-player Charleston is a common house rule. There is no official version and groups set it up in different ways, so agree on yours before you deal.

What feels different

  • Each player sees more of the wall than in a four-player game, so hands come together a little faster.
  • Discards are easier to track, which makes defence more important.
  • Payment works as normal: the discarder pays double, the other player pays the hand's value, and a self-drawn win is paid double by both.

Common questions

Can you play mahjong with 3 players?

Yes. The National Mah Jongg League has official rules for three players. You build four walls, deal to three seats and leave the fourth seat empty.

Do you do the Charleston with 3 players?

Officially, no: play begins with the dealer's first discard. Many groups still play a three-way Charleston as a house rule.

Do you remove any tiles for 3 players?

No. American mahjong uses all 152 tiles with three players. The empty seat gets no tiles.

How many tiles does each player get with 3?

The dealer gets 14 and the other two get 13, the same as in a four-player game.
