The three size groups
| Group | Typical height | Good for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | About 1.2 to 1.3 in | Most home games and classes | Fine for most eyes |
| Large | About 1 7/16 in | Readability, older players, a weighty feel | Needs racks of 19 to 20 in |
| Travel | 3/4 to about 1 1/8 in | Suitcases and small tables | Harder to read and handle |
How to choose
- If anyone at your table struggles to read small print, go standard or large, and pair it with a large-print card.
- If you will carry the set, note the weight as well as the tile size. Standard starter sets weigh around 8 pounds; travel sets 3 to 5. Travel sets.
- Buying racks separately? Match the rack length to the tile size: rack sizes.
Common questions
What is the standard size of an American mahjong tile?
Most starter sets use tiles about 1.2 inches tall and 0.9 inches wide. Designer sets run 1.25 inches or larger.
What are large mahjong tiles?
Large-format tiles are about 1 7/16 inches tall and 1 inch wide. They are easier to read and handle, but need longer racks.
How big are travel mahjong tiles?
Travel tiles in the sets we track range from 3/4 inch to about 1 1/8 inches tall.
Are Chinese mahjong tiles bigger?
Often, yes. Chinese sets are frequently larger and thicker than American starter tiles, which is one reason they do not fit American racks well.
